About Data Storage Conversion
Data storage capacity is measured in units based on bytes. Digital information is stored in binary format using bits (0s and 1s).
Common Data Storage Units
Basic Units
- Bit (b) - The smallest unit of data (0 or 1)
- Byte (B) - 8 bits, can represent one character
Binary Prefixes (Base 1024)
- Kilobyte (KB) - 1,024 bytes
- Megabyte (MB) - 1,024 KB = 1,048,576 bytes
- Gigabyte (GB) - 1,024 MB = 1,073,741,824 bytes
- Terabyte (TB) - 1,024 GB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes
- Petabyte (PB) - 1,024 TB
Quick Reference
- 1 Byte = 8 bits
- 1 KB = 1,024 bytes
- 1 MB = 1,024 KB
- 1 GB = 1,024 MB
- 1 TB = 1,024 GB
Storage Examples
- Small Text File: ~10 KB
- High-Quality Photo: ~5-10 MB
- MP3 Song: ~3-5 MB
- HD Movie: ~4-8 GB
- Modern Video Game: 50-100 GB
- Enterprise Database: Multiple TB to PB
Note on Binary vs Decimal
This converter uses binary prefixes (base 1024), which is the standard in computing:
- 1 KB = 1,024 bytes (not 1,000)
- 1 MB = 1,024 KB (not 1,000)
Some systems use decimal prefixes (base 1000), which can cause confusion. Storage manufacturers often use decimal, while operating systems use binary.
Common Uses
- File Sizes - Bytes, KB, MB, GB
- Storage Devices - GB, TB
- Internet Speed - Bits per second (Mbps, Gbps)
- Memory (RAM) - GB
- Data Centers - TB, PB
